He was a well-known African American photographer, jazz pianist, composer, writer of poetry and novels, painter, and filmmaker. Parks used his talents to tell the story of poverty, racism, and social injustice. He was the first African American to write and direct a major Hollywood film: The Learning Tree. Throughout his lifetime, Parks received honorary doctorates and awards for his work and in 2002 was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum. She served on the Kansas State faculty from 1924 until her retirement as an associate professor in 1963.  Throughout her career, Harris sought educational advancement. She received a Master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1927 and subsequently studied at the Chicago Art Institute, the University of Mexico, and the University of Colorado. In 1930, she toured museums in Italy, France, and Spain under the tutelage of Michel Jacobs (1877-1958), the founding director of the Metropolitan School of Art. Correspondence includes a letter Harris wrote while working as a domestic science instructor at the American Missionary Society's Tillotson College in Austin, Texas (1915) and letters received from Margaret Justin, Dean of Home Economics (1923-1954). Three diaries record Harris' international trips: Europe (1930); Mexico (1940) and India (1951). Sketches, block prints, paintings, and handmade greeting cards represent her art and design techniques. One folder contains photocopied, handwritten, and typed recipes, a number of them credited to known associates.  Scant photographs and a notebook (1916-1918) pertain to her father, Samuel Murrell Harris (1858-1944), who operated the Hillside Dairy in Manhattan, Kansas. The photographs were taken during the early 1940s, and used by Ruth Linquist in her 1946 publication, Using and Sharing Our Hours (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Samuel M. Harris is shown at the site of his old barn, located at 700 Harris Avenue. are open for research.","These documents represent the life of a member of the Prairie Gem Homemakers Extension Unit in Sedgwick County, Kansas.","This collection is arranged in five boxes. Box one consists of documents and boxes two through five are made up of scrapbooks.","Mary Louise (Lou) Wilkins Herndon Was born February 26, 1924, to Loren and Ruth Wilkins in Liberal, Kansas. Her father was a jeweler, a watchmaker and later an optometrist. Her mother was a concert pianist. They moved to Wichita Kansas when Lou was in about sixth grade. Herndon attended Allison Junior High in Wichita and then graduated from Wichita High School North in 1941. On June 27, 1943, she married Billy Bob Herndon who was originally from Anson, Texas. They were married at West Side United Presbyterian Church, Wichita, Kansas. They had one daughter and three sons, all of whom have made their homes in Sedgwick County. Herndon was very active in the Wichita and Goddard communities. She was a 4-H project leader and a community leader of the Rolling Hills 4-H Club for many years. She was a lifetime member of the Prairie Gem Home Extension Unit from the time the unit was started until it was disbanded (for lack of members). Herndon also served on the county extension council for several years and was a treasurer for Attica Township. At the same time, she was the caretaker of the Pleasant Ridge cemetery in Goddard, Kansas. In about 1963, Herndon began china painting and was a member of the Sunflower China Painters in Sedgwick county. She was the state president of the Federated China Painters Association of Kansas for two years. Herndon was passionate about encouraging all the painters in Kansas to exhibit their work at the Kansas State Fair. More than anything else, Herndon enjoyed her 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She passed away November 11, 2018, and a Memorial headstone is in Pleasant Ridge Cemetary, Goddard, Kansas.","The collection was donated to Kansas State University by Lou Herndon and her daughter, Sherry Elder in November 2017. It was housed in the Department of Special Collections until it was processed. It received the accession number 2019-20.005. When processed, boxes were missing, therefore, the whole collection did not get processed. Schafer was born in Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, on August 30, 1941. He attended the University of Minnesota and earned a B.S. in Animal Husbandry in 1963. In September of 1963, David Schafer married Jeanne in St. Paul, Minnesota. He then went on to South Dakota State University and received his M.S. in Animal Science in 1968. In 1968 Schafer worked for Kansas State University and spent two years in Andhra Pradesh, India as a meat technologist with the KSU-USAID program. In October of 1968, his first child, Jason, was born. In 1972, Schafer earned his Ph.D. in Food Science from Kansas State University and worked as an extension specialist in meats. In December his second child, Derek, was born. He joined the staff the same year when he became an associate professor at Kansas State University. In 1975 Schafer’s third child, Mark was born.  In 1984 Schafer was promoted to full professor. He served as Faculty Senate President from 1986-1987. In 2003 he was awarded Emeritus status and retired on August 2, 2003. Over the years David Schafer belonged to a variety of organizations. Many of the materials from the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry contain records from seminars, short courses, and instructional materials about proper food safety, processing, and meat handling. Some of the seminars include Midwest Meat Processing, Angus Beef Round Up, and Kansas-Nebraska Processed Meats short course. Almost all of these contain agendas and outlines for papers presented. Other records included are articles, recipes, and course notes. Many of the seminars contain information about food safety and meat handling, as well as tests, pamphlets, and coursework containing information and notes. This information generally covers processing, packaging, and preparation of meat. Courses contain diagrams of cuts and articles. Food safety contains proper handling of meat, storage, and hand washing techniques. The Angus Beef Round Up does contain photographs of a cow being butchered that some people might find objectionable.  Other materials in this collection are publications that cover a range of topics focused on meat, such as economic, production, health issues, and ethics. Publications in the collection include newsletters, articles, magazines, newspaper clippings, magazine clippings, and several draft versions of articles. The publications contain items from the Animal Science and Industry Facts newsletter that was published by the cooperative extension service of Kansas State University; this newsletter contains news and information about livestock. Also included are articles about various kinds of food-borne illnesses, food preservation, and food poisoning. Magazines include Animal Science and Industry trade publications, catalogs, and publications about food products and equipment.  David Schafer served on the Faculty Senate, including one year as the Faculty Senate President. Materials from his leadership role are featured alongside his professional documentation in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.
