Box 8

Box eight includes a continuation of research materials related to Native American sacred sites. Specifically included here is research on hot springs sites in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Wyoming. Materials in box eight also correspond to slides (both North American and European) and provide further context for said slides.

Box 5

Box five contains a continuation of research and materials related to Pat's Mayan measurement system research, including general research and other site floor plans.

Box 10

Box ten contains archaeological research materials related to the Manhattan locality or directly tied to Kansas State University (or its predecessor: Bluemont Central College). Topics include the Seger Mastadon, fossil finds and archaeological sites in Manhattan, and broader Kansas archaeology materials. Also included are oral history interview transcripts conducted by Pat with some of her friends, including Abby Marlatt.

Series 4: Slides & Photographs

Photographs & Slides includes the majority of photographic material within the collection. Some items have corresponding information or research notes within other series pertaining to the research topic.

Various Locations

Box 18E includes slides of Etruscan, Mycenaean, and early Greek art, as well as slides of art and architecture of Ancient Crete. Box 18E also includes slides related to the Travel & Archaeology series (New Mexico and Texas slides). Box 18F includes slides from various locations in Mexico.

Europe

This subseries, which is easily the largest of the digital photo subseries, is composed of photos from Pat O'Brien's travels in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Wales. There are also some photos whose locations have not been positively identified, but they appear to have been taken in one of the aforementioned countries. The years listed on some of the photos are 1976, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1995, 1999, and 2007. There are photos of streets, buildings (especially churches, museums, and government buildings), statues, graves, art and artifacts, ruins, waterfronts, wide shots of cities, landscapes, and sites of anthropological, archeological, and geological interest.

Croatia

This selection features images from Zagreb. These photos were taken during O'Brien's travels and thus are mostly made up of features of the cities that she found noteworthy. There are images of streets, buildings (including St. Mark's Church and Zagreb Cathedral), and statues.

Norway

This selection features images from Olso. These photos were taken during O'Brien's travels and thus are mostly made up of features of the cities that she found noteworthy. There are photos of streets, buildings (including churches), statues, and waterfronts. Specifically, there are images Gol Stave Church, the Viking Ship Museum, and a statue of Christian IV.

Mexico

This selection features Copper Canyon, Mexico City, Oaxaca, and a few images that likely were taken in one of these locations but were unable to be positively identified. These photos were taken during O'Brien's travels and thus are mostly made up of features of the cities that she found noteworthy, as well as sites of particular anthropological interest. There are many photos of buildings (especially churches), landscapes, streets, and pottery. The Copper Canyon photos were taken in 2008, and some of them are clearly labeled based on their subjects.

Travel & Archaeology

Also included in this series are slides related to research on hot springs, birds and animals, and Native American sacred sites (animal lodges, etc). Specific locations of these sites include South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Wyoming, and Montana.

Box 11

Box eleven contains photographs related to various research topics with corresponding materials and paperwork in other series. Topics include sacred sites and hot springs research (South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana), Washington Marlatt homestead, the razing of the Kansas Artificial Breeding Service buildings, miscellaneous postcards, and a Yucatan photo booklet.

Germany

This selection has the largest amount of images of all of the locations in the digital photos of this collection. The cities present in this order are Bad Staffelstein, Bamburg, Berlin, Colmar, Creglingen, Dachau, Eichstadt, Erfurt, Greifswald, Iphofen, Kelheim, Köln, Lubbeck, Meissen, Miltonberg, Nürnberg/Nuremberg, Prien, Rothenburg, Schleswig, Strasbourg, Traunstein, Volkach, Weimar, Würzburg, and a few photos from an unidentified origin. There are also 8 photo presentations. The first features Creglingen, Köln, Meissen, and Traunstein, the second features Erfurt and Weimar, the third features Prien and Versailles, the fourth features Würzburg, the fifth features Iphofen and St. Mary of the Vineyard, the sixth features Iphofen and is dated to 1995, the seventh features Rothenburg and is dated to 1995, and the last features Lubbeck, Griefswald, and Schleswig and is dated to 1995. These presentations seem to be composed of the other images in this collection.

This selection features Alba, Brescia, Florence, Herculaneum (in Naples), Lecce, Milan, Ravenna, Rome (including Vatican City), Sicily (especially Palermo, Syracuse, Taormina, and Vallei de Templi), Taranto, Uffizi, Venice (from 1976 in particular), and a few photos from an unidentified origin. These photos were taken during O'Brien's travels and thus are mostly made up of features of the cities that she found noteworthy, as well as sites of particular anthropological interest. There are images of buildings (especially churches, museums, and government buildings), Greek and Roman ruins, statues, artifacts, and landscapes.

Wales

This selection features images from Cardiff, Ilston, and Rhossili. These photos were taken during O'Brien's travels and thus are mostly made up of features of the cities that she found noteworthy. The images include pictures of Park Le Bruce Burial Chamber, Cardiff Castle, St. Mary's Church (in Rhossili), and landscape images from near the shoreline.

North America

This subseries is composed of photographs from Mexico and the United States of America. Important locations in this subseries are Copper Canyon (from 2008), Mexico City, and Oaxaca in Mexico and the Midwest region of the U.S. The photos feature buildings (especially churches), landscapes, streets, pottery, and notable anthropological, archeological, and geological sites.

United States of America

This selection includes photos of the Midwest region, especially Colorado. There are images of geological features (including maps of these features) that reach as far east as Montana, as far east as Iowa, as far north as North Dakota, as far south as Arkansas. There are maps of the Penoke figure called Stone Man, Old Man Mountain in Colorado, the Missouri river system, and a topographical map of Colorado.

South America

This subseries is composed of photos from Pat O'Brien's travels in Peru and Bolivia. The majority of the photos feature buildings (especially churches), streets, and landscapes (especially the Andes mountain range).

Bolivia

These photos were taken during O'Brien's travels and thus are mostly made up of features of the cities that she found noteworthy. This selection primarily features buildings (especially churches), streets, and landscapes (especially the Andes mountain range). There are some photos that either feature Bolivia or Peru and were unable to be positively identified as one country or the other.

Box 1

Box one contains various biographical information, including photographs of Pat O'Brien and Donna Roper and copies of Pat's CV and obituary. Contents also include miscellaneous newspaper articles and correspondence that are not associated with a dedicated project or research area, award nominations, and society/commission materials from Professional Archaeologists of Kansas (PAK), Iowa Archaeological Society, Kansas Antiquities Commission, Sigma Xi, Ellis Island Centennial Commission, and Plains Anthropological Society. Other materials include a collection of conference booklets and abstracts from the American Indian Workshop, Flint Hills Conference, and Plains Anthropological Conference (1969-2002).

Box 4

Box four contains research materials related to Mesoamerica and, more specifically, Pat's Mayan measurement system research. Items include correspondence about the project with Hanne Christiansen and others, NEH and NSF grant applications, project-related manuscripts, comments from other scholars, measurement reports, and site floor plans. Box four also includes materials related to the Prehistoric Native Americans of the Great Plains series.

Mesoamerica

Slide set twelve contains photos of sites related to research on Mayan measurement systems, as well as archaeological photos of the Art of Ancient Maya and Mexican gold objects. Related materials also include Mayan site plans within the respective series.
